Stanton Territorial Hospital Planning Underway

When it was built more than 25 years ago, Stanton Territorial Hospital was equipped with the most modern systems and equipment available. Medical technology has made considerable advances since the 1980s, and it has become clear that the time to modernize the hospital's systems and equipment has come.

Planning is being based on a resident population of up to 60,000, which is projected to be reached in the NWT and Kitikmeot about 2045 (Stanton serves the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut as well as the NWT). Planning renovations for a hospital takes a long time. Changes in building standards, technology, patient needs and volumes, models of care and best practices, availability of new systems and equipment, among other things, are all researched and considered in the planning process.

By summer, we expect to have an estimate of the costs, and in the fall, the Legislative Assembly will vote on whether or not to go ahead with a renovation project.
