History

Con Mine

Feb 16, 1937

Con Mine was the first NWT gold mine, producing from 1938 - 2003. With a Robertson headframe, it was a prominent landmark, visible for miles. Built in 1937, the Con Mine hospital was where Yellowknife's first doctor, Dr. Oliver Stanton, and his wife Ruth, delivered the first children born to the city's fledgling mining community. It operated as a small cottage-style hospital and first aid station. In 1942 a 16-bed hospital was built at Con Mine. Until 1947 it was the primary hospital in Yellowknife.

Red Cross Hospital

May 27, 1948

In 1947, one of Yellowknife's largest construction efforts was underway on the shores of Frame Lake. By then, the population of Yellowknife was big enough to be eligible for Red Cross Oupost funding, and monies were granted for a new hospital. On January 6 1948, the Red Cross Hospital opened its doors to the people of the region. When the Red Cross left in 1960, the hospital was renamed to Stanton Regional Hospital. On May 22, 1966 the Stanton Hospital burned to the ground.

Stanton Hospital Reunion Stories - Barb Bromley

Jun 1, 1949

Barb started working at the Red Cross Hospital in 1949. A highlight of her time at the hospital included starting an immunization clinic that she ran from 1956 until 1963. She later took a refresher course with other nurses, and when she graduated she left work at her family’s hardware business to go back to nursing.  She worked at the Stanton Regional and Stanton Territorial Hospitals from 1975 until the mid 1990s, managing the homecare program.

A Temporary Hospital

Jan 1, 1967

The Elks Hall was put to use as an emergency hospital between 1966 and 1967. The downstairs clubhouse became an operating room, and the office and upper level were used as the wards. During this time, it was common to have a barroom operation and barroom babies born in Yellowknife.

Stanton Yellowknife Hospital opened on Franklin Avenue in 1967, with Dr. Oliver Stanton and Mrs. Ruth Stanton returning to Yellowknife for the occasion. This hospital had 37 beds, but even before the official opening, a planning committee was working on an expansion to add additional beds by 1969. This was the primary regional hospital until 1988, when the current Stanton Territorial Hospital opened.

Stanton Reunion Stories - Estrelle Sumcad

May 1, 1973

Estrelle was part of the Stanton Hospital team from 1973 – 2008, serving as the Head Nurse in Emergency.  One of her favourite memories occurred the first week she was in Yellowknife; the OR flooded, and the nurses mopped the area in their dress nylons. They were awarded for their hard work with $20 each and were assigned a new duty, but they ended up in the Gold Range for the rest of the day!

Stanton Reunion Stories - Tina Rivera

Jan 1, 1979

Tina arrived in Yellowknife in 1979 and quickly realized that her time at Stanton Hospital would be an excellent learning experience. Working as a nurse, she recalls her first time treating frostbite, having never seen it before in her tropical home country.  While she would later become an expert at treating it, she still feels very sorry for that first patient!

Stanton Reunion Stories - Margaret Anne Woodside

Jan 1, 1985

Margaret was a physician at the Stanton Hospital in the 1980s. While her job was busy, it was enjoyable because of the many wonderful people that worked together. She recalls that everyone was available to help out and with a smile. She remembers dashing from room to room catching the “stork’s” deliveries, as well as juggling work in the Emergency Room with the great help from nurses and X-Ray staff.

The Vision

Jan 1, 1985

With the changes in technology over 20 years, as well as the growing population of Yellowknife, funding was approved in 1984 for the construction of a new hospital. By 1985, the vision was in place, and the Architect's Rendering of the future Stanton Hospital had been approved.

New Hospital Delivers

Jul 19, 1988

Open only an hour and a half, the first baby was delivered at the Stanton Yellowknife Hospital on Tuesday, July 19, 1988. The hospitals doors opened at 7am, and the patient was admitted shortly thereafter. To commemorate the occasion, a silver mug was engraved and presented to the baby as a gift.  Headlines in the newspapers the following day heralded the opening of the hospital, and of this special delivery.

Operating Room Advances

Oct 23, 1998

In 1998, Stanton Yellowknife Hospital was constantly in the news.  Surgeons were bringing more and more surgeries to Yellowknife for patients who only years before had to be transferred to hospitals in Edmonton. This progress helped decrease the amount of time a patient would be away from their home, and was a welcome change for the community.

Stanton Reunion Stories - Staff Memories

Jul 22, 2013

At a 25-year reunion in July 2013, the memories shared by previous staff members were primarily of the wonderful team that worked together and the fun they had both on and off the clock. Christmas and Halloween parties were frequently mentioned, and games of cards, and enjoying the summer sun were extremely popular! Here, four staff members share their memories:

Rene Columbo, a staff nurse from 1963 – 1964 fondly remembers working in the medical clinic with colleagues who became life long friends.

Joan Coren (Shaw), who worked as a Lab Technician from 1960 until 1964, loved watching the sun come up in the morning, and enjoying coffee in the kitchen of the old hospital. She also recalls having to phone people in the middle of the night to come in as blood donors to handle emergency situations.

Nurses Mary Hutchinson (Makaryshyn) (1959) and Mona Graton (1959-1964) loved playing cards. Mary recalls the frequent games before work, causing staff members to be a little bit late if the game was close!
